Given its prominence, tolerance and generosity, there are men in this city, and other men who come daily from afar, with incredible talents, able to devise and develop ingenious strategies and objects. And if it were provided for (by the Council) that the works, and the objects they created, given that they created them, could not be taken away by others, together with their honor, such men would (instead) exercise their ingenuity, and would develop ideas and do things which would be of great use and benefit to our State. Given the authority of this Council, anyone in this city who creates a new and ingenious object, not previously created in our territory, granted that it is done to perfection, and can be used and (in practical terms) implemented, shall be bound to register it at the office of the Superintendent of the City. It shall be forbidden for anyone else, in any of our lands and territories, to make any other object in the image and likeness of the one registered (original), without the consent and license of the inventor, for 10 years. Yet, if anyone should do so, the aforementioned author and inventor shall be free to summon him to any office of this City; if the right was infringed, the aforementioned office shall order the person who infringed such right to pay the author and inventor one hundred ducats, and immediately disassemble the object. However, our Republic has the (full) faculty, at its own discretion, to access and use, according to its needs, each of the objects and instruments, but on the condition that none other than our Republic and the authors can use them; they are not the property of all.
